Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality are promising technologies, also for robotics augmentation of humans. An example of that is the SARA project, in which AR is used to project the internal organs of the patient directly on the body. This allows the surgeon to focs more energy on the surgery itself, and not on transforming mentally 2D MRI/CT scans to 3D volumes.

The SARA project investigated the use of augmented reality to overlay a 3D rendering of medical images and planning information onto the patient’s anatomy during neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery to enhance the Computer Assisted Surgery (CAS) experience.
